It’s time to vote on our July book! For some reason, picking three books to vote on was really hard 🫣 After lots of deliberation, these are the options I came up with! I’ve heard great things about these from reviewers I trust, so I’m sure that we’ll love any of them.

The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden

In a desperate gamble to save her throne, a young monarch conceals a secret marriage in the shadows of an enchanted forest—and unknowingly alters the fate of her world. In this rich and epic novel, the author turns the real history of a remarkable woman into an unforgettable tale of mystery, enchantment, and the price of power.

Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill

Born in fire. Tempered in blood.

Epheria is a land divided by war and mistrust. The High Lords of the south squabble and fight, only kept in check by the Dragonguard, traitors of a time long past, who serve the empire of the North.

In the remote villages of southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving—a test of courage and skill that not all survive. But when three strangers arrive in the village of Milltown, with a secret they are willing to die for, Calen’s world is ripped from under him and he is thrust headfirst into a war that has been raging for centuries. There is no prophecy. His coming was not foretold. He bleeds like any man, and bleed he will.

Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan

Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater, make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles-until they are hired to pilfer a famed sword. What appears to be just a simple job finds them framed for the murder of the king and trapped in a conspiracy that uncovers a plot far greater than the mere overthrow of a tiny kingdom. Can a self-serving thief and an idealistic swordsman survive long enough to unravel the first part of an ancient mystery that has toppled kings and destroyed empires?

It’s almost June, and that means it’s time to pick our next book club read! I wanted to give us three fun and fresh options, so I’ve been keeping a close eye on new fantasy releases and have picked three that snagged my attention. Like many of you, I read Veronica Roth as a teenager and am very intrigued by her new adult fantasy release 👀 Sunyi Dean is the author of one of my favorite fantasy standalones, The Book Eaters, and I’m confident that her latest release will be just as good! And of course, we’ve read R.J. Barker together in the past (remember The Bone Ships?). His newest release is bound to be incredible!

Voting will close on Tuesday, May 26th and our June pick/giveaway winner will be announced on the 27th (which also happens to my birthday heyooo) ☺️ Can’t wait to see what we settle on!!

Seek the Traitor’s Son by Veronica Roth

Elegy Ahn did not ask for destiny to find her. She is happy with her life as a soldier, defending her small country from the Talusar, a powerful nation who worships a deadly Fever. A fever that blesses half of its victims with mysterious gifts. But then she’s summoned to hear a prophecy—her, and the most ruthless of Talusar generals, Rava Vidar. Brought face to face, they learn that one of them will lead their people to victory over the other… but they don’t know which. And at the center of both of their fates: a man. A man that, Elegy is told, she will fall in love with. In just one day, Elegy’s old life—her job, her purpose, and her future—is over. She and Rava are destined to collide, with the fate of their nations hanging in the balance. And when they do, only one will be left standing. Elegy intends to make sure it’s her.

The Girl with a Thousand Faces by Sunyi Dean

When Mercy Chan washes up on the shores of Hong Kong with no family, no money, and no memories, the only refuge she finds is the infamous, ghost-infested slum of Kowloon Walled City. Since then, she has rebuilt her life, working for the local triad as a ghost talker and dealing with the angry and bitter spirits who haunt the district. The filthy gutters and cramped alleyways of Kowloon have become her home. But the past Mercy can’t remember isn’t done with her. An unusually powerful ghost has infested Kowloon’s waterways, drowning innocents and threatening the district. It claims to know Mercy—and secrets from her past that are best left forgotten. As Mercy is drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with this malignant spirit, she begins to realize that the monster she fights within these walls may well be one of her own making.

Mortedant’s Peril by R.J. Barker

Irody Hasp is a Mortedant, a cleric tasked with reading the last thoughts of the dead—though no one thanks him for it. No Mortedant is popular, but Irody is scarcely tolerated even by the other members of his own guild, and rarely selected for anything but the lowliest of jobs. This impoverished existence would be dismal enough—but after reading the corpse of a low-level records keeper, Irody’s troubles quickly multiply when his own apprentice is murdered, and all fingers point to him as a suspect. The only way to save his own skin is to find the real culprit himself, an investigation that quickly attracts powerful enemies with few scruples, and draws him into a plot that threatens the entire corrupt yet wondrous city he calls home.

Let’s vote on our book club pick for May! Several of you said you’d love to read a good fantasy standalone, and some people also showed interest in continuing on with the Shadow of the Leviathanseries. With that in mind, here are the three options I’ve come up with for next month. I can’t wait to see what we pick! Voting will close on Monday, April 27th. Once voting closes, don’t forget to check the Discord for virtual meetup details and our monthly giveaway winner ☺️

A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett (Book 2 of the Shadow of the Leviathan series)

Join Ana and Din as they set out to investigate another seemingly impossible murder case, facing a cunning adversary who can predict every move they make.

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison

In this character-driven fantasy standalone, Maia—a half-goblin prince—unexpectedly ascends the throne of the Elflands after his father and brothers die in a mysterious accident. Despite his attempts to rule with kindness and integrity, Maia finds himself tied up in court intrigue, racial tensions, and his own loneliness. Can he uncover the mystery behind his family’s death whilst confronting his own trauma and isolation?

The Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan

This debut dark fantasy novel is a reimagining of the legend of the Beast of Gévaudan in 18th century France. Blending horror, fantasy, and romance, the book follows Sebastian—an immortal monster slayer—who is hunting down a creature that evaded him years ago.

It’s time to pick our book club read for March! We have three great options lined up—a grimdark epic fantasy, a character-driven sci-fi, and a standalone fantasy romance. I’ve heard amazing things about each of these and will be so thrilled with whatever direction we decide to go in ☺️ I hope you all are having a great month! I’m not going to lie—February has been kicking my trash. But reading Red City by Marie Lu with you all has been such a highlight. I hope you’ve loved it as much as I did!

Whispers of the Storm by Z.B. Steele

Described as a moody, banter-laced, violent, and poetically framed story—“I wasn't always the monster they see me as. Half of the songs they sing are stories of my grandeur. The other half are tales of my misdeeds. The sad truth is that they're all true. So, listen to my tale and learn why it all happened. Learn the reason for the war, the reason for all the death. Listen to my tale and listen well. I won't be alive long enough to tell it again.”

These Burning Stars by Bethany Jacobs

“A dangerous cat-and-mouse quest for revenge. An empire that spans star systems, built on the bones of a genocide. A carefully hidden secret that could collapse worlds, hunted by three women with secrets of their own. All collide in this twisty, explosive space opera debut.”

The Swan’s Daughter by Roshani Chokshi

“In this lush and romantic novel from New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi, a prince is only as good as his beating heart and a maiden is only as good as her honest word. But when love and the truth become impossibly tangled, the two must figure out how to survive together, or fall completely apart.”
